Suleyman Pasha Madrasa

It is the first Ottoman university with a regular courtyard, built in 1332 by Süleyman Pasha, son of Orhan Gazi.

How to read this monument?

Süleyman Pasha Madrasa is one of the early education buildings established by the Ottoman Empire in Iznik. The layout of student cells and classrooms arranged around the open courtyard offers a simple example of the madrasah type. Its use today with arts and crafts venues ensures that the building continues to live through production rather than being a silent monument.

historical background

Süleyman Pasha Madrasa is the first official madrasah of the Ottoman Empire, built in 1332 by Rumelia Conqueror Süleyman Pasha, son of Orhan Gazi.

It is the pioneer of the classical Ottoman madrasah scheme, with its domed student cells and classroom space arranged around its open courtyard.

Nowadays, it has been restored and serves as a lively culture and craft market, where Iznik tile masters' workshops and exhibition shops are located.
