From Antigoneia to Nikaia
Macedonian commander Antigonos Monophthalmos re-establishes the lakeside settlement under the name Antigoneia. Shortly after, Lysimachus captured the city and named it Nikaia, after his wife.
The foundations of today's grid plan and the main axes opening in four directions were laid in the Hellenistic city.
