How to read this monument?
The Lake Basilica is the youngest archaeological discovery that makes visible the relationship between the ancient city border of Iznik and the lake shore. Instead of reducing the ruin to a single legend, it is necessary to read its three-aisled plan, its location close to the shore and the ongoing research together. The cruise line at the reception center allows viewing the underwater structure without exceeding its protection limits.
Don't miss
Try to read the three-nave basilica plan from the wall lines selected under water.
Observe how light, wind, and water level change the visibility of the artifact.
Match the narrative at the visitor center with the actual ruin on the shore.
Compare the structure with the basilica plan of Hagia Sophia and the late antique layers of the city.
historical background
Iznik Lake Basilica was noticed on the eastern shore of the lake during aerial documentation of historical and cultural heritage in 2014. The three-naved building in the east-west direction is protected under shallow water near the shore.
Archaeological studies investigate the structure's relationship with religious life in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods. Although it is thought that it may have been a martyrium dedicated to St. Neophytos, scientific studies on the function of the building and its history of destruction continue.
The visitor welcome center and walking platform provide the opportunity to view the relic without entering the water. Water levels, light and wind can change the visibility of the basilica throughout the day.
