Green Mosque (Çandarlı Halil Pasha Mosque)

Early Ottoman monument, built by Architect Hacı Musa by Grand Vizier Çandarlı Kara Halil Pasha, known for its unique turquoise and purple tiled minaret.

How to read this monument?

Green Mosque is the most powerful symbol of early Ottoman architecture in Iznik. The building, initiated by Çandarlı Kara Halil Hayreddin Pasha, was completed by his son Ali Pasha at the end of the 14th century. The turquoise and green glazed minaret, which gives its name, is the point where the Seljuk decoration tradition and the new Ottoman architectural language meet.

historical background

Iznik Green Mosque was started to be built in 1378 by the Ottoman grand vizier Çandarlı Kara Halil Pasha, and was completed in 1391 during the reign of his son Ali Pasha.

Built by architect Hacı Musa, the building is known for its marble-covered prayer hall of the Early Ottoman period and its minaret decorated with unique turquoise, green and purple tiles.
