Discover the visual language of tulip, carnation, rumi, hatayi and cloud motifs that establish rhythm, direction and balance on the surface.
The motifs on Iznik tiles form varying compositions in different periods, workshops and usage contexts. Rather than assigning a single and unchanging meaning to each shape, it is more revealing to look at how the motif is repeated on the surface and its relationship with other elements.

Tulip and Carnation: Fullness with Direction
The thin and vertical form of the tulip directs the composition. The layered petals of the carnation fill the surface and strengthen the garden effect. Although symbolic interpretations are possible, the context of use, period and function of the work should be taken into consideration.
