When we say 'museum' in Iznik, we are now talking about two separate institutions. New Iznik Museum archaeological collection; Nilüfer Hatun Imaret, built in 1388, focuses on Turkish and Islamic works. Assuming that two buildings are the same may cause you to misjudge both the trip duration and expectations.

If you are visiting the city for the first time, think of the two museums not as alternatives to each other, but as different parts of the same story: one depicts the material traces of the basin from prehistory to Rome and Byzantium; the other highlights early Ottoman architecture and a collection of Islamic arts.

Iznik Museum: Establish the Timeline with Archaeology

In the contemporary museum structure, prehistoric finds from the Ilıpınar excavations, Roman Theater works and tile kiln production pieces can be seen in the same chronology. Coming here before visiting the monuments makes it easier to mentally list the periods you will encounter within the walls.

Production scraps, tripods and faulty ceramic pieces are particularly valuable; because it shows not only the finished work, but also the testing and firing process in the workshop.

The soup kitchen, built in the name of Nilüfer Hatun, the mother of Murad I, is one of the outstanding examples of early Ottoman buildings with an inverted T plan. Due to its portico, domed central space and stone-brick façade layout, take time for the building itself before the collection.

In the Museum of Turkish Islamic Arts, inscriptions, tombstones, coins and works of art from different periods stand out. Stone works in the garden are also part of the visit.
