Iznik center is large enough to be easily visited on foot. While walking on the ancient Cardo and Decumanus axes, you can see with your own eyes how the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman layers overlap.

09:00 — Start at Istanbul Gate

Starting the day at the northern gate of the city allows you to grasp the ancient scale of the city. Three-tiered defensive passages and marble friezes bear the traces of Roman garrisons.

Hagia Sophia in the center hosted the Ecumenical Council of 787. Then, witness the dance of master hands on the ceramic wheel in the ceramics market.

18:30 — Sunset by the Lake

For sunset by the lake, move to the shoreline where the western horizon opens. Make time for a coastal walk before sunset, as the light and wind change depending on the season.
