1600-Year-Old Secret Under the Lake: Iznik Sunken Basilica

A closer look at the discovery, plan and ongoing research of the three-naved basilica, which lies approximately 50 meters offshore and in shallow water.

The basilica ruins, discovered through aerial photographs in 2014, lie approximately 50 meters offshore from the shores of Lake Iznik and in a shallow depth not exceeding a few meters. Although the three-aisled plan of the building can be read, research continues on when and by what process it was submerged.

The Lost Council Palace?

The relationship of the building with the cult of St. Neophytos or the lakeside area where the Council of 325 is thought to have taken place is among the possibilities being investigated. These are not definitive results, but hypotheses tested with excavation and find data.
